Al Qaeda’s second in command, the Libyan national Atiyah Abd Al-Rahman has been killed in Pakistan, earlier this week. However the US officials did not say how he was killed. It is believed that Al Rahman was killed on the same day when CIA drone/s was striking in Waziristan.
US officials think that after the death of Osama Bin Laden, this terrorist group was heavily relying on this man as he rose to the no. 2 position after the Egyptian national Ayman Al Zawahiri. The US Navy Seals found evidence from Bin Laden’s hiding place, after killing him, that Al Rahman was playing an important role as in this extremist group. Last autumn, US Government announced a reward of $ 1 million, if anyone can inform about his whereabouts.
Al Rahman joined Al Qaeda in early Nineties. In 1993, he moved to Algeria and worked as a communicator between Algerian radicals and Al Qaeda fighting a civil war against the military government in the country.
American officials also claimed that Al Qaeda is in the verge of defeat. US officials are expecting to carry out more successful attacks to weaken the leadership of Al Qaeda. Their primary focus is to weaken the leadership of the Al Qaeda. US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said, “Now is the moment, following what happened with Bin Laden, to put maximum pressure on them….If we can continue this effort we can really cripple Al Qaeda as a major threat.”
