CHICAGO: Federal judge Wednesday denied bail to Pakistan-born Canadian and accused of plotting terror attacks in India and Denmark, Tahawwur Hussain Rana saying there is a “risk” that Rana could flee the country if he is released on bail to avoid a possible 30-year jail term.

Announcing her decision, US Magistrate Judge Nan Nolan at Federal court told Rana, “I am sure you would be disappointed. But you have to keep doing the best you are doing”.
Judge Nolan rejected the offer of Rana’s family of $1 million in bond to release him, saying the amount to be not “sufficient”.
Nolan also ruled that Tahawwur Rana is a “risk of flight” as he maintains strong family ties with Canada. Rana’s father and siblings live in Canada. Nolan also said, Rana “has some but not substantial ties to the US”.
Rana was arrested in October by the FBI on charges that he was helping in a plot of attacking a Danish newspaper to co-conspirator David Coleman Headley.
Rana runs immigration business and also a grocery store in Chicago. According to Nolan, Rana has extensively traveled to countries like Dubai, China, India, UK, Germany and Saudi Arabia from US and he is also having lot of international contacts.
