COPNEHAGEN: China criticized developed nations’ lack of action Wednesday in fulfilling their commitments on the carbon emissions reduction and also on the financial support to the developing nations in coping with climate change.

Special representative in the UN climate talks of China, Yu Qingtai said, “You will find a huge gap if you make a comparison between their pledges and the actions they have so far taken.” He said this at a press conference in Copenhagen during the UN Climate Change Conference.
At least 300 billion US dollars of financial support had been asked by the developing countries to help deal with the impacts of climate change. The financial commitments of the developed nations have fallen far short of this goal and actually no money has been provided.
Talking about emission cuts, the 4% pledge by US by 2020 compared with 1990 levels and the 20% of the European Unions are also criticized by the developing nations because this is not enough.

The developed and rich nations have pledged of reducing their emissions to 1990 levels by 2000. Yu said that none of their commitments has been fulfilled.
He said that the developed nations should reflect on whether they have the political will to make good on their pledge. Yu added further, “In this regard, what they need to do is to do some soul-searching.”
