A day after the country embraced republican rule, Nepal’s national flag has been installed at the main gate of the Narayanhiti palace belonging to sacked King Gyanendra in place of the royal flag. Over a dozen persons were injured during clashes that erupted after thousands of people gathered in front of the palace shouting anti-King slogans, where demonstration was banned. Trouble started when the police baton charged & fired tear gas cells on the people. However, tension ended after the security personnel guarding the palace allowed the people to place the national flag, eye witnesses said.

People have been demanding that the national flag be placed after the King’s flag was removed. But they were not allowed to move towards the main gate leading to tension. People shouted republican slogans & started jumping & dancing after the national flag was hoisted in front of the main gate of the palace. The Constituent Assembly has asked the King to vacate the palace within 15 days & the structure would be made a museum.
