30th April, 2012, Kano (Nigeria): On Sunday, few gunmen assaulted frightened worshippers at a church service using minor explosives. According to reports at least 17 people have been killed including 2 university professors.
The assaulters targeted a quondam part of Bayero University’s campus where people use a theater for worship services. Ibrahim Idris, the spokesman for Kano state police told that this attack left several others seriously injured. By the time the state police responded, the attackers left the place with their motorcycles.
After the assault, the soldiers and police cordoned off the university campus as the sound of gunfire echoed in the nearby streets. A spokesperson from the National Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria, told that soldiers stopped journalists to enter the university campus.
No group took the responsibility till now. Ibrahim Idris told that assaulters used explosives bundled in a aluminum soda cans for the attack, the same procedure that was used by Boko Haram, a radical islamist group that reportedly have connections with 2 other al-Qaida-aligned radical groups in Africa.
In recent times, Nigeria, with over 160 million people, has experienced growing anger over corrupt politicians and crushing poverty fueling rancor among the citizens.
