TEHRAN, Iran: An earthquake of 4.9-magnitude on Saturday left about 700 people injured in the town of Fareghan in Hormozgan province in Southern Iran. The quake occurred at 06:34 Hours local time (0304 GMT, Tuesday).
The epicenter was located in an area 56.67 degrees in longitude and 27.98 degrees in latitude.
No casualties or damage to properties is yet reported.
Governor of Bandar Abbas Ahmad Rasti said the quake struck the city at 2:56 a.m. local time on Wednesday.
Iran is prone to frequent earthquakes and many of which have been devastating. The worst of it was in December 2003 that hit Bam southeastern Kerman province in killing 31,000 people, which is about a quarter of its total population. The quake destroyed the ancient mud-built citadel of the city completely.
The deadliest earthquake was in June 1990, which measured 7.7 on the Richter scale and it killed 37,000 people and left over 100,000 injured in the northwestern provinces of Gilan and Zanjan. This quake devastated 27 towns and about 1,870 villages in Iran
