Internet will run out of IP addresses in just 500 days

by jit mukherjii

By JIT Mukherjii
Sydney, 20th May: Computer experts have expressed the opinion that in around 500 days, the internet will run out of IP addresses. IP addresses are widely used to differentiate one computer from another and that getting running out may crate many problems in the computing world.
The unique numbers, which are known as Internet protocol addresses, help identify the world’s networked devices. An IP address generally has four numbers from 0 to 255 which is mainly used to distinguish one computer from another. It has been observed that about four billion combinations can be made out of it. But the proliferation of networked devices means soon that will no longer be enough.
In a way, IP addresses are like phone numbers, which need to be entered correctly if a right connection is to be made. So the ability to uniquely identify everything in the computer world is essential. IP addresses are like phone numbers in another way, too.
“Unlike the telephone system, it’s not easy to just add more digits,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted chief scientist at the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre, Geoff Huston, as saying.
Although every telephone number in Australia was successfully altered, the phones themselves didn’t change. Humans simply dialed an extra number and get connected to the person.

This article is misleading at best.
The old method of making internet addressed (IPv4) is what is being talked about in this article. There is a newer method of making internet addresses (IPv6 defined in 1998) has 4 times the length of address (128 bits over 32 for IPv4).
This means that instead of about 4.3 billion addresses, IPv6 can handle 320,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 addresses.
So we have around 2 years for people to finish implementing IPv6. This is already underway/completed in large organisations.

OMG!!! This is another big issue like Y2K!!
how r thry gonna solve this?

  8. Hmm lets wait and watch people will do after that.. May prefix an extra 255, like 255.255.255.255.255, but its not that easy since the systems running currently need to be updated to this new format and thats not an easy pick.

The world is moving over to the ipV6. Many companies has already started moving over to ipv6. This dearth of addresses will give problems only in static ip address using countries like US and UK. If service providers like AT & T and Verizon change their networks to ipv6, the effect can be reduced so that others can cope up with the change

We’ve been “almost out of IP addresses” for over 10 years. While this may be true this time around (I’m not saying that it is) you’ve essentially yelled “WOLF!” too many times for anyone to care. So, just who are the “Computer Experts” and how did they figure out it was be 500 days? Or was that number selected just to make a cute headline…
