After a meeting with Roshan Giri, the general secretary of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha; the West Bengal chief minister has decided to ask the centre to mark Darjeeling as a backward region so the district gets all the benefits from the central government. Mamata Banerjee wondered that why this has not been done before.
The Morcha delegation also met Samar Ghosh (chief secretary), G.D. Gautama (home secretary) and Anil Verma (Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council administrator) to put their demands related to the GTA.
Samar Ghosh told the delegation that Gorkhaland Territorial Administration bill has not yet been sanctioned by the president. Once it is approved by the president, Election Commission will hold a delimitation procedure for conducting polls. These formalities will take some time.
After the meeting, the Morcha secretary told that if Darjeeling is categorized as a backward district, then it will get the center’s fund for backward regions to develop the region.
