3 people lost their life while several others were severely injured in a clash between police and protestors in Assam’s capital Dispur on Wednesday. The clash occurred after protestors marching towards the state secretariat were stopped by the police. The demonstrators were protesting against the government’s move to evict people from wetlands and hills in and around Guwahati. The protest was led by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) and as per eye witness, it turned violent after police resorted to tear gas. A 9 year old boy named Ruhul Ali was also killed when he was hit by teargas shell on his head.
A senior police official while speaking to the press said that protestors damaged vehicles and pelted stones at police who were forced then to open fire. The protestors set ablaze 3 JNURM buses along with several private vehicles and a police vehicle. Meanwhile, KMSS leader said that the protest was peaceful and they wanted to submit a memorandum to a govt official but no one turned-up. CRPF forces were called to take care of the situation.
