Re-polling starts in Manipur amid tight security

4th Feb, 2012, Imphal: Re-polling has started at thirty-four polling posts in Manipur’s hill districts. Re-polling began in the midst of tight security considering the threats from insurgent groups.manipur picture

Added security measures were called for because the government has reports that militant groups are roaming around near polling stations.

Officials stated that re-polling started from 7 am at all the thirty-four polling booths spread across Senapati, Churachandpur, Chandel, Ukhrul and Tamenglong and continue till 3 pm.

Re-poll was essential as there was disturbance by militant groups as well as irregularities during the Manipur assembly polls on 28th January.

According to sources, this time there would be 3 – 4 layers of security arrangements to stop any kind of ill incidents. Intelligence sources reported that there were movements of extremist groups around the polling booths. Vote counting will take place on 6th March.

Some prominent names, in today’s elections, are Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, Th Debendra Singh, Laishram Nanda Kumar, Yumkham Erabot, Nimachiand Luwang (president of Manipur People’s Party) and L Chandramani.
