20th June, 2012, Donetsk: On Tuesday, England striker Wayne Rooney played his first match in Euro 2012 championship as England beat Ukraine 1 – 0 to qualify to the quarter finals stage as the number one team from Group D. In another Group D fixture, Sweden could not reach the knock out stage in spite of beating France 2 – 0.
Rooney scored the only goal of the match when it was only 3 minutes into the second half. The Manchester United footballer was ineligible for the first two games as the picked up a red card during the qualifiers. England just required a draw to qualify for the quarter finals.
In 62nd minute, a shot by Marko Devic crossed the goal-line but the Hungarian referee denied the goal. This week, Michel Platini, the UEFA president, told that five officials in this event would stop this kind of events, but last night’s incident again dismisses that theory.
In another match, France just required a drew to make it to the quarter finals, but they lost to already eliminated Sweden 2 – 0. Zlatan Ibrahimovic hit the net for Sweden in the 54th minute and Larsson made it two in 92nd minute.
