30th July, 2013, kolkata: Young Indian chess players did when their seniors could not do. The 5 – member U-16 Indian team clinched the gold medal in the recently concluded World Youth Chess Olympiad in China on Monday.
The young Indian chess players did not a single match in the tournament. They won 8 games as well as drew two matches to defeat top seed Russia to clinch the title by just one point.
This was India’s 3rd gold prize in this esteemed sporting event. India won gold in 2007 in Singapore and also in 2008 in Turkey.
The Indian team members were Sayantan Das and Diptayan Ghosh from Kolkata, Murali Karthikeyan and Gireman Jagadeesan from Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra’s Shardul Gagare. The manager-cum-coach of the side was Visweswaran Kameswaran.
Sayantan Das and Shardul Gagare represented India in last year’s Olympiad when India secured a bronze medal in Istanbul in Turkey.
