3rd August, 2012, London: Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal and tennis pair Leander Paes and Sania Mirza playing in mixed doubles of 2012 London Olympics, have kept the medal hope alive. Saina Nehwal reached to the semi final of the women’s singles event whereas Paes and Sania have made it to the quarter finals of the mixed doubles event.
On Thursday, in the quarter finals, Saina Nehwal was playing against Denmark’s Tine Baun. Saina won the match 21 – 15, 22 – 20. The thirty-three year old Dane could not manage to cope up with the twenty-two year old Indian ace. In the 2nd game, Tine Baun set up a tough resistance but, Nehwal took the match with 22 – 20.
In tennis mix doubles’ round of 16, the Paes – Sania were up against Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjic and Ana Ivanovic. The match was quite an easy one for the Indian dup as they beat the Serbs 6 – 2, 6 – 4.
India also has some good news from the boxing scene. Vijender Singh made it to the quarter final of the 75 kgs category with a 16 – 15 win against United States’ Terrell Gausha.
Parupalli Kashyap, India’s new badminton sensation lost his singles quarter final match against World No. 2 Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei.
