6th August, 2012, London: Indian woman boxer M C Mary Kom won her match against Karolina Michalczuk of Poland at the 2012 London Olympics. This is the very first time when women’s boxing is making its way to the Olympic Games. The five time world champion was very emotional after her win as it was her twin’s 5th birthday.
29 year old Mary Com, participating in the Woman’s 51 kg Fly category, defeat her Polish opponent with a comfortable 19 – 14 margin at the ExCel Arena in London.
After the match, the Indian medal aspirant told that her opponent was very strong, but she was technically a bit weak. She used her experience to defeat her. While speaking about the Olympic Games, she told that every athlete dreams to be in the Olympics. This is her twelfth year in boxing and she had to come out of retirement and changed her weight to participate in the Olympics.
Gurbakhsh Singh Sandhu, the coach of India, told that she boxed with a good footwork. It was a huge day Indian boxing. Mary Com comes from the north-eastern part of the country and it is a big boost for her and as well as a big day for women’s boxing.
