4th August, 2012, London: On Friday, India’s Vijay Kumar fought a hard battle with 5 other top shooters to grab the silver medal in the men’s twenty-five meter Rapid Fire Pistol event at the 2012 London Olympics.
Kumar defeated Russia’s Alexei Klimov, Chinese pair of Zhang Jian and Ding Feng and Christian Reitzof Germany in the 40 – shot final to end at the second spot. Leuris Pupo of Cuba took the gold medal with 34 points.
There are several Indian shooters who are quite popular in the country, but the twenty-six year old Commonwealth Games champ, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, went unnoticed till he won the medal yesterday. Kumar perfected his skills at the army shooting ranges before becoming a part of the elite squad of India.
This is India’s 4th medal in shooting. In 2004 Athens Olympics, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won a silver medal in double trap event and in 2008 Beijing Games, Abhinav Bindra became the first Indian to grab an individual Olympic gold medal. This year, Gagan Narang won bronze in ten meter air rifle.
After his win, he told that he had mentally prepared himself for this moment. Being in the army made him mentally tough and he used that advantage. He has achieved whatever he had planned.
