1st August, 2013, New Delhi: This time, India will field its strongest ever badminton squad at the World Badminton Championships that would take place in Guangzhou in China starting from 5th August and will go on till 11th August.
In the 2011 edition, Indian women’s doubles team of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa ended the 28 years medal drought for India by winning a bronze medal. However, this time Gutta and Ponnappa would not play as a pair.
According to reports, the Badminton Association of India president Akhilesh Das Gupta told that Saina Nehwal is India’s best bet at the World Championship this year. This is the very first time when India would have 2 representatives in each of the 5 categories.
There will be no qualification rounds at the World Badminton Championships. Only top fifty badminton players in the world are eligible to take part in the event. The BAI president stated that the members of the Indian squad are training very hard and he has no doubt that all of them would make the country proud with their performance.
