NCAA Opener: Mount St. Mary’s Beat Coppin State

Coppin State on Tuesday local time lost the match by Mount St. Mary’s 69-60 to open the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament.

Coppin State (16-21), the first 20-loss team to make the NCAA tournament, led throughout the first half & had a 34-33 halftime lead in Dayton, Ohio. Mount St. Mary’s opened the second half with a 3-pointer to grab its first lead & took control with a 9-0 run with about nine minutes left. It was the first NCAA tournament victory for Mount St. Mary’s, which lost in 1995 & 1999.

The first round begins in two days with 16 games, followed by another 16 the following day. The Final Four will be held April 5 & 7 in San Antonio.

Sophomore guard Jeremy Goode scored 21 points for the Mountaineers (19-14), who advance to meet No. 1-ranked North Carolina, the top seed in the East Regional, in a first-round game in Raleigh, North Carolina, on March 21.

The school from Emmitsburg, Maryland, faces long odds against North Carolina (32-2). No. 1 seeds have won all 92 first-round games since the NCAA tournament expanded to its current format in 1985.
