India wins Nehru Cup; beats Syria

India retains Nehru Cup with a 5-4 win over Syria at the Ambedkar Stadium today.

Subrata Paul conjured a spectacular performance. He saved three penalty shots when the match was stretched to penalty shootout after following the 1-1 deadlock by the end of the regulation time.

From the Indian side Climax Lawrence, Steven Dias, Sunil Chhetri, Anwar Ali and Surkumar Singh scored in the shootout where as Renedy Singh and Meharajuddin Wadoo had missed the target in penalty shots.

From Syrian side Raja Rafe, Abdul Fatah Alaga, Mosab Balhous and Abdul Razak Al Hussain hit the target where as the shots of Hamzeh Al Attouni, Wael Ayan and Ahmad Haj Muhammad were saved by Subrata Paul.

India received $40,000 for successfil title defence and Syria went richer by $20,000.

Among the 20,000 crowds Bollywood actor Salman Khan also witnessed this gala win.

India earlier won this title in the year 2007 and another title last year by clinching the AFC Challenge Cup. This gives India a berth in the 2011 Asian Cup in Doha.
