28th April, 2012, New Delhi: Thanks to brilliant performances form openers Virender Sehwag and Mahela Jayawardene, Delhi Daredevils secured a victory against Mumbai Indians at Ferozeshah Kotla Ground in Delhi, on Friday.
Batting first, Daredevils openers shared a 135 runs partnership for the first wicket with Sehwag scoring 73 and Jayawardene scoring 55 runs. As soon as Jayawardene got out, Kevin Pietersen came in the scene and played a superb knock scoring 50 runs in just 26 balls. Losing 5 wickets in 20 overs, Delhi set a target of 208 runs for the visitors.
In response, Mumbai began their innings in a bad way as Aiden Blizzard got out for a duck in the very first over and master blaster Sachin Tendulkar lost his wicket in the third over scoring only 7 runs followed by Rohit Sharma (12). Mumbai lost their top three batsmen with just 19 runs on the board. Wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik and Ambati Rayudu tried to put Mumbai back on track by sharing a 96 runs partnership, with Karthik scoring 40 runs and Rayudu scoring 62. When both Karthik and Rayudu got out, all hopes were on Pollard, but he failed to deliver as S. Nadeem bowled him out when he was on 16. After that the visitors fell short of their target and finished their innings scoring 170 in 20 overs with the loss of nine wickets.
After the match, Delhi captain Virender Sehwag, who was declared man-of-the-match, told, “We batted well at the start. All our top order fired. I think I am in the best of form as far as IPL is concerned. I have scored around 350 in last few matches and that says about it.”
