The state government earlier announced that the poll will be in two phases, but now the Calcutta High Court ordered a three phase panchayat election favoring the State Election Commission that had dragged the government to the court over this issue.

As per the State Panchayat Election Act 2003, the state government has the power to declare the panchayat poll dates only after due consultations with the State Election Commission. But, in this case, the court observed that the government announced the dates without consulting the dates.

Today, in its verdict, the Calcutta High Court has also asked the State Election Commission to propose three possible dates as well as the division of the districts to the state government within 24 hours.

The court also added that the State Election Commission is free to ask for central paramilitary forces for the election.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, asked the police, the municipal corporation and the fire brigade to submit the report. The chief minister also announced Rs. 2 lakh compensation to each family of those killed. Rs. 50000 compensation will be paid to those who are injured.

Mamata Banerjee asked people, who sleep there, to take precautionary measures. Deputy Mayor Farzana Alam blamed the previous Left government for this incident. She told that they would check the licenses of these building and action would be taken as early as possible.

Congress leader and Union Minister Deepa Das Munshi stated that there must be a judicial inquiry in this incident. On the other hand, West Bengal’s leader of the opposition Suryakant Mishra said that this not a time to play blame game. There has to be an enquiry on the incident.

Norwegian telecom carrier Telenor has majority stake in Uninor and they are among those telecom carriers whose licenses were invalidated by the apex court earlier in February. Uninor’s licenses are valid till 18^th January, 2013.

In a statement, the company told that they would issue a public notice to all the users in West Bengal and Kolkata circle asking them to exhaust their balance by 18^th January, 2013; and use MNP facility to reach to any other service operator. Uninor has around 5.6 million subscribers in these two circles. The company has already stopped supply new SIM cards as well as recharge coupons with immediate effect.

After 18^th January, the company’s assets and business will be transferred to a band new entity called ‘Telewings Communications’ and the Norwegian company Telenor will have seventy four percent stake in that. Recently, Telenor took part in spectrum auction via Telewings and they have got spectrum for 6 circles – Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh West and Uttar Pradesh East for around Rs. 4018 crore.

According to reports, the Amitabh bachchhan agreed to inaugurate the festival after Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal Chief Minister, personally requested him to be present at the event. The inaugural ceremony will be held on 10^th November.

Last year, the 17^th Kolkata Film Festival was inaugurated by the Bollywood actor and KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan. The event took place at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. People are also anticipating that state’s brand ambassador Shah Rukh Khan may also show up at this year’s inaugural event.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, told that Mother Teresa lived a life of devotion, dedication and worked for the poor. If we put a smile to the poor people of this country, then it would be our suiting tribute to the great soul Mother Teresa. Banerjee also added that she still fondly cherish those few opportunities when she got to meet and work with her.

Taslima Nasrin claimed on twitter that the police had arm-twisted the organizers of Kolkata book fair. The organizers told that the hall was not ready, but they later stated that the release of the book might have been a security threat.

‘Nirbasan’s seventh part was supposed to be released at the AC hall of the Milan Mela grounds. In the morning she stated that she would not be present at the book release because she will not be allowed to enter the state.
