Bangalore, September 07 — On his proposed visit in November to India, US President Barack Obama preferred Mumabi over Bangalore.

Obam will be visiting Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai, which was badly damaged during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks of 2008.

The president is expected to hold interactive meeting with leaders of industry and business.

A senior Maharashtra government official said, “We have received intimation about Obama’s visit from the Centre. However, a formal communication is awaited. What we also learnt is that President Obama has selected Mumbai and not Bangalore.”

Reasons of opting for Mumbai instead of Bangalore is not known.

In recent past former US President Bill Clinton spent a day in Mumbai, said official.

Post 26/11 incidence, the Prince and Princess of Spain, the President of Argentina, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and South African President Jacob Zuma have visited Mumbai’s Taj hotel and paid tribute to those who were killed in the attacks.

BANGALORE: There has been never such a crowd at the M G Road in the recent times. It seems that the Metro train is Bangalore’s latest tourist spot.

A day after BMRC had allowed public viewing of the Metro model coach which was stationed on M G Road, Bangalore there was a rush on Sunday to the place. There were at least 5 traffic policemen on duty to manage the traffic. Many visitors parked cars just next to the Metro track despite police warning.

The excitement could not have been missed. People had come from all over the city to get a glimpse of the mock-up train. Many posed in front of the train and captured photographs. They also touched the coach to get a feel of it, held the handle and stood near the footboard as if they were on the move.

Some of them peeped into the driver’s cabin for checking the technical aspects. All the visitors touched the glass pane despite the notice-`Do not keep your hands on the glass’.

It was a miscellaneous crowd. “I have been on trains. But the `Metro feeling’ is different. I am looking forward to travelling in it,” said 12-year-old Jeremy C I.

Many school students rushed to the spot immediately after their classes. “Now, the feel of Bangalore being a true metropolis is slowly emerging. It all depends on how people use it. There was similar excitement when Volvo buses started plying,” said Madhukiran R, XII student of St John’s High School.

Even expats seemed excited about the “new friend in town”. “We have subways in Korea; travelling was so easy there. I hope it would be the same here,” said Jeesoo Park, a Korean.

“I am waiting for the Metro to expand to other parts of the city. Then I can get rid of my bike and travel by Metro,” said Prasanna Kumar, a techie.

July 14, 2010

Bangalore: The sleep by the Opposition Congress and JD(S) in the Karnataka Assembly in demand for a CBI investigation into illegal mining scam which involved Reddy’s brother continues for the third night. It seems as if the protesting MLAs are actually enjoying it. All seem to be in the best of their spirits and few of them even tried their singing qualities.

H R Bhardwaj the Governor is leading the charge against the brothers. The state tourism minister G Janardhana Reddy with his brother Revenue Minister G Karunakara Reddy together with the governor wants the brothers sacked.

The ante of the meeting was increased when Home Minister and Prime Minister on the issue commented on the issue. In the meeting, it is believed that Bhardwaj discussed the ways in which the influence of the Reddy brothers was increasing. Also discussed was how they exploited their position in the Cabinet and that their illegal mining activities were leading in deterioration to the rule of law in the state.

However the Centre’s keen interest in the Karnataka politics has some deeper reasons. The Reddy brothers are not just Karnataka players. The real concern of the Congress is Reddy’s support that is extending to elements that are creating trouble for its Andhra government. For now the plan seems to be to insulate its government in Andhra Pradesh against any such attack and a shaky BJP government in the state can be said to be a bonus.
It seems that the BJP is trapped in between and cannot move either way. These protests have actually united the Congress & the JD(S), but any action for the powerful Reddys can well lead to a split in party’s state unit. Thus it has been decided by the party’s core group to wait and watch keeping the decision for taking any action against the Reddy’s on hold.

Bangalore, May 1 – A leading IT company employee, 31-year-old man who recently got married kills his wife and attempted to commit suicide at Ganganagar, Bangalore.

The newly married couple, Bijoy Samuel and Rajani Rajan started their life just six days ago. Bhopal based Bijoy working here in the HR department of an IT firm. The 25-year-old Rajani from Kerala married to him on April 24.

The arrested Bijoy was taken into the city court which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody last night.

After strangulating his wife with a cloth, he tried to commit suicide by cutting nerve. Deputy Commissioner of Police HS Revanna said.

“However, we are not convinced about it and it seems strange as theirs was an arranged marriage,” Revanna said.

He told that police were questioning the neighbours and also Samuel’s friends as it seems too weird.

The incident came into public whilst the elder brother of Bijoy came to the couple’s home for inviting them for a gathering at his house.

The confrontation between them led to the murder, Bijoy revealed to the police. He said it was suffocation to live with her ‘utter dislike’ for him and unremitting condemnation on his behavior.

Rajani’s parents have taken the body to Kerala. Police said they also wanted to make a query to Rajani’s parents. At present they are not willing to speak up anything about the unexpected tragedy on their daughters’ life.

Almost two hours it took to evacuate the building. About 70 people were injured in the fire and out of them 22 of them are critical in the Intensive Care Unit.

According to senior fire official, fainted persons due to inhaling of the smoke were rushed to the nearby hospital for first aid.
He added, “The fire began in a lift service cable in the second floor and spread through the duct with smoke engulfing the remaining floors,” Erappa, fire chief officer said. “More than the fire it was the smoke that caused panic”.

The building was engulfed by a thick blanket of smoke in the fire and several persons were seen scampering out of their offices and breaking window panes in desperation and also jumped out of the building.

Fifteen fire tenders rushed to the building and managed to rescue trapped people.

Nagendra Swamy, COO of Manipal hospital said, “We have received around 50-60 patients. Some of the persons are seriously ill. We are evaluating the patients’ health.”
