“Ahmedabad Bandh” turns violent

Situation worsened in many parts of Ahmedabad on Friday as bandh called to protest against the death of two boys, of Asaram Bapu’s ashram, under mysterious circumstances turned violent with protesters attacking busses in many parts of the city.

The ABC’s South Asia correspondent Peter Lloyd has been arrested in Singapore on drug charges. The 41 years old was arrested earlier this week & is expected to be charged with drug-related offences today.

Landslides killed 14 in Uttarakhand

At least 14 people have been killed & 12 others injured after a passenger bus was hit by landslides at Sukhidhang area of Chamawat district in Uttarakhand on Friday. The bus carrying 34 passengers was bound for New Delhi from Thal in the hilly Pithoragarh district when it was trapped in heavy landslide following rain.

Blast in Chechnya killed 9 Russian soldiers

At least nine soldiers have been killed on Tuesday & four others injured after an explosion in ammunition in the war-ravaged southern Russian province of Chechnya.
Defence Ministry said, “An uncontrolled explosion occurred as ammunition was being transferred from a tank into a vehicle near the town of Shali”. Two of the six injured following the explosion died in surgery, raising the initial death toll from seven to nine.

20 killed in accident in Patna

At least 20 people have been killed when a jeep carrying a marriage party fell into a water-filled ditch in Patna in the wee hours on Tuesday. Anwar Hussain, SP of Patna said, “The dead include 10 women & nine children”.

Six used bombs recovered in Amritsar

Punjab Police has recovered six used bombs which were laying abandoned in the garbage. A senior official of Police has said that when employees of Municipal Corporation were on their routine job found six bomb shells from garbage.
The empty bomb shells approximately 5 inches long were packed in the gunny bag. The official said that such type of explosive material being used in the army.

Six kg opium seized, 2 arrested

The Punjab police has arrested two notorious drug smugglers, believed to have political connections, & recovered 6 kg of opium from them in Amritsar. Both the arrested drug smugglers, Gian Singh & Jagjot Singh, of Tarn Taran district were intercepted by a police patrol party near the old Sabji Mandi Hall Gate.

A bus has been plunged down a cliff near the southern Bolivian city of Potosi in which 47 killed & 10 injured.

Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi undergoes angioplasty

Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, Union I&B minister & West Bengal Congress president, underwent an angioplasty to clear two heart blockages at the Apollo Gleneagles hospital in Kolkata late Sunday night. His condition is stable.

Earthquake struck Andaman islands
