UPA government starts work

Five out of the six key Cabinet ministers today was allotted portfolios.

P Chidambaram has been given home, A K Antony defence and Sharad Pawar was given agriculture ministries. These three were in-charge of the same ministeries during the Manmohan Singh’s first term. Pranab Mukherjee has returned as the finance ministry. He held this portfolio 25 years back in the Indira Gandhi government.

S M Krishna is the new foreign minister with his Cabinet debut. He is former Karnataka chief minister and ex-Maharashtra governor.

Mamata Banerjee earlier was given portfolio of Railways. She is now in Kolkata and was yet to assume charge. Only 6 out of the 19 Cabinet ministers who took oath along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday have been allocated portfolios.

P Chidambaram said that a 100-day action plan will be implemented from 1st of June. He said that Naxalism, terrorism and insurgency in the North-Eastern states were the key challenges. Parnab Mukherjee said that his top-most priority is to bring the economy back to high growth path. A K Antony said of ensuring military preparedness.
