Saul Itzahayek, a 42 years old Canadian businessman, was released from Motihari prison after an appellate court reduced his jail sentence to the duration he had already stayed in judicial custody in connection with a case relating to his entering India on an expired visa.
Itzahayek, a Montreal businessman, was arrested in May last year at Raxual town in East Champaran district on Indo-Nepal border on charge of entering India from Nepal on an expired visa & was subsequently convicted.
The court of the fourth additional district sessions judge Arvind Sinha yesterday upheld his conviction, but reduced his prison sentence to the duration he was in jail.
Senior officials of the Canadian Embassy in India received him from Motihari prison & took the businessman to New Delhi. Earlier, the court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate had convicted him & awarded a three-year jail term.
