Sarabjit’s family arrived in Pakistan
Indian Prisoner Sarabjit’s family arrived in Pakistan through the Wagah border. Balbir Kaur, Sarabjit’s sister reiterated that her brother was innocent & they were hopeful of his early release. Sarabit’s family would meet him after 18 long years. The Pak govt recently granted them visa to facilitate the meeting. They hope to get Sarabjit’s sentence commuted to life imprisonment. As of now he is scheduled to be hanged on May 1st.
Sarabjit’s family is also planning to meet PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari & PML(N) chief Nawaz Sharif. Sarabjit has been languishing on death row in Pakistan’s jail, after being convicted of being an Indian spy. Ansar Burney, former Human Rights minister of Pakistan would meet them on their arrival.
The family members, in anticipation of the meeting after 18 year long years, are carrying a lot of gifts and home cooked food for the prisoner. Balbir Kaur is carrying 18 rakhis, one for each year, to gift to Sarabjit.
Sarabjit, who Pakistan claims is Manjit Singh, was sentenced to death in 1991. His family denies he is a spy as alleged by Pakistan and insists he accidentally strayed into the Pakistani territory.
His mercy petition was rejected by Musharraf on March 3. Pakistan`s Supreme Court too rejected Sarabjit`s plea for clemency earlier in March 2006.
