Riots erupted in Punjab in protest of Vienna temple attack

On Monday riots erupted in Punjab in response to the killing of a Sikh leader who died after an attack on a temple in Vienna a day before.

According to statement of police officials, the rioters smashed cars and also set fire to empty trains. The rioters snarled road and train traffic.

A curfew was imposed in four towns of Punjab after violent protests that followed the attack at the temple in Vienna. One person has been reported to be killed in the protest.

At the temple, 6-young Sikh men stormed into a hall where two visiting sect leaders and hundreds of worshipers had gathered. They were armed with guns and knives

Guru Sant Rama Nand, one of the leaders, died of his wounds, and Sant Niranjan Dass is in stable condition after a surgery.

Both the men were the Ravidass sect leaders, who revere a saint of the same name believed to have taken birth in the 15th century to a leather workers family, considered “untouchables,” or outcastes, and today it is known as Dalits.
