17th July, 2012, Kolkata: On Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and the TMC chief, declared that her party will vote for UPA’s nominee Pranab Mukherjee in the Presidential election.
After a meeting with her party’s MLAs and MPs, she addressed a press conference and stated that they have decided to support Pranab Mukherjee since they does not have any other choice. She also added that they are not doing it to please anyone, instead they are doing it to uphold democratic principles.
Before UPA confirmed Pranab Mukherjee as their candidate for the presidential poll, Mamata Banerjee and Mulayam Singh Yadav suggested former president APJ Abdul Kalam’s name as their first choice for the presidential poll. But soon Mulayam changed sides and decided to support UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee.
Today, at the West Bengal state secretariat, she told that it is tough luck that they could not build consensus around Abdul Kalam.
However, Mamata did not reveal whom her party will support in the vice presidential poll as still there is enough time to decide in that.
