Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi reach Assam to oversee flood-hit regions

2nd July, 2012, Guwahati: On Monday, Sonia Gandhi, the UPA Chairperson and Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, went to the flood hit regions of the north-eastern state of Assam to inspect the situation and oversee the relief operations in flood hit regions.assam flood picture

All twenty-seven districts of the state are hit by severe rain. Landslides and flood have left seventy-seven people dead and according to reports around several people are missing in Assam. In many places, Kapili river and Brahmaputra river are flowing over the danger mark. In this worst flood in 8 years, the wildlife sanctuaries of the state have not been parted with either.

The Prime Minister has already announced that he will give Rs One lakh ex-gratia from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. He also asked the Defence Ministry to put up Army for relief and rescue operations. Dr. Manmohan Singh has already assured the government of Assam they the centre will help them to deal with this situation. In some regions, the water levels are said to be going down.

In the meantime, rain and heavy flood left 75000 people homeless in the neighboring state of Meghalaya.
