On Tuesday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described malnutrition in India as a national shame. Dr. Singh stated that, in the world, every third malnourished child is an Indian. The Prime Minister further added that the government cannot solely depend on the ICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme) to handle the problem of malnutrition. PM made these remarks while releasing a report on hunger and malnutrition.
Manmohan Singh told, “the problem of malnutrition is a matter of national shame. Despite impressive growth in our GDP, the level of under-nutrition in the country is unacceptably high,”
“Though the ICDS continues to be our most important tool to fight malnutrition, we can no longer rely solely on it.”
“We need to focus on districts where malnutrition levels are high and where conditions causing malnutrition prevail,” added the Prime Minister.
Dr. Singh told that different sectors like health, drinking water, sanitation and nutrition have to work together.
