Tracking criminals will become easier from 2011-2012. Home minister P Chidambaram today said that Rs 2,000-crore project will be implemented in bringing all the 16,000 police stations in the country under one network. According to Chidambaram, it will help in countering terror challenges and will become operational by 2011-12.
Chidambaram also mentioned that the Multi Purpose National Identity Cards (MNIC) is going to be issued to 1.1 billion resident Indians once the enumeration work is completed by next year.
While inaugurating a conference of small entrepreneurship home minister said, “We are working on Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS). That will link each of the 16,000 police station in India so that any of the police station can contact any other police station.”
He added that all the states have already appointed nodal officers and they have also signed MoUs with the central government for the early completion. He further said that after the completion of CCTNS there will be a quantum jump in India’s ability to counter various challenges to internal security, especially all the terror threats.
