On Friday, India will mark a full year since it has last registered a case of polio. The last polio case recorded was in West Bengal, last year. It is a great victory for the country that is still working very hard to completely eliminate this crippling disease.
WHO (World Health Organization) has also hinted that they may remove India’s name from the list of polio endemic nations very soon. Most countries in the world uprooted this disease long ago. This achievement will help to improve India’s image as it is considered as a major emerging power in the world.
According to some experts, though it is encouraging, yet the fight against polio is far from over. In a statement, Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare said “we are excited and hopeful, at the same time, vigilant and alert.”
