In Santiniketan a student of Visva Bharati University Saswati Pal who was 20 year old was allegedly shot dead by an unindentified youth, who also tried to kill himself at the Ananda Sadan hostel today. The assailant who was 28 year old fired at the girl from a point-blank range & then shot himself on the head. The girl died at the spot while the youth was taken to the Bolpur hospital, where his condition was stated to be very critical. Both knew each other from childhood and they were the residents of Ghatal in East Midnapore.

Saswati was a third year degree student in music and was staying in the hostel in Santiniketan where the youth was frequent visitor.
