Election in April-May, EC splits, crucial situation

Just before the Lok Sabha election Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami is demanding the removal of his colleague Navin Chawla for being biased towards the Congress.

Talking to a private news channel, Mr Chawla said that he will not resign and the government will not act on the Chief Election Commissioner’s report. He added, “The dignity of the Election Commission is paramount at all times and flawless elections have been delivered during my tenure.” Contrast to this Mr Gopalaswami said that he feels the EC has to be above all suspicion.

This is crucial for citizens of India because elections are just two months away (scheduled to be in April-May) and he election commission has do preparation for general elections.

BJP is asking for the removal of Chawla since 2006. BJP says that the government has to abide by the Chief Election Commissioner’s recommendation.

The Congress in return says that Chawla is not biased towards them. Digvijay Singh, party general secretary told to the reporters that there was no question of his removal.
