11th April, 2012, Jakarta: On Wednesday, a massive earthquake hits the Sumatra Islands’ Aceh province. According to latest reports, the earthquake was 8.9 on Richter Scale. Later, United States Geological Survey revised the magnitude to 8.7 on Richter Scale. They also reported that the centre of the quake was thirty-three kilometers under the floor of the ocean; approximately 495 kilometers away from Banda Aceh. Till now, there is no report of destruction or major casualty in Indonesia or its surrounding regions. The disaster management team of Indonesia told that power was down in the Aceh province. People came out from their home as soon as they felt the tremor.
A tsunami warning has been issued in 28 countries including Indonesia, India, Australia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Maldives, Thailand, Malaysia, Oman, Bangladesh, Somalia, Kenya, South Africa, Pakistan, Singapore, Iran and other Indian Ocean Islands.
The tremors were also felt in West Bengal, Bihar, Manipur, Assam and in other northern states of India. The government of India has already issued a tsunami warning for Andaman and Nicobar islands.
