Bombay High Court on Monday declared construction on 120 acres of land in Mumbai illegal. It could affect 1.5 lakh families. The High court said the construction, which had been carried out in Mulund, Borivli & Bhandup areas, was illegal as it had been done on forest land.

The land in question was earlier notified as private forest land, but the state government later renotified it as government forest land.

The Bombay High Court on Monday upheld the government’s move. The decision comes as a blow to the residents of the Metro, who are already struggling to find answers to acute housing woes. But, it will be a big relief for financial capital’s choking lungs.

Kandivali, Mulund, Thane stretches declared forest land on Monday. It has also dismissed the petition of a large number of developers who were constructing projects on these tracts of land.
Both developers and residents will move the Supreme Court on this issue demanding how the state government can suddenly wake up to an Act that was not implemented for over 50 years.
