16th June, 2012, New Delhi: On Friday, Congress officially announced Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s name as their presidential candidate. Two days ago, Congress had a meeting with their allies TMC and SP. After that meeting, both TMC and SP declared former president Abdul Kalam’s name as their favored candidate for the post. They also mentioned Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Somnath Chatterjee’s name as the other two choices.
Yesterday, top Congress leaders meet and decided to go with Pranab Mukherjee. Both SP as well as BSP supported the candidature of Mukherjee. Now, one can also expect that the Left will also support Congress’ candidate as TMC is opposing Pranab Mukherjee. According to reports, NDA may also back the veteran politician who shares a good rapport with the opposition and in return NDA may ask for the Vice President’s post.
On the other hand, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee remained firm on A. P. J. Abdul Kalam as their candidate. Last night, in Kolkata, she told that the game is not over yet. Their party still thinks that Abdul Kalam is the right man for his position. They are not changing their position.
