Communal tension in Bangalore
An eerie silence prevailed in the communally sensitive area of J C Nagar, near Palace Grounds, in the Karnataka capital after baton charge by the local police on Friday. Trouble was started in the afternoon when lumps of pork were thrown inside a religious place in the area by a small group of troublemakers. They entered the religious place & damaged a few tiles, reportedly, in retaliation to a stone-pelting incident on an adjacent religious place of another community two weeks ago.
The religious place witnessed a heavy crowd today owing to the special weekly prayer. Those inside, took to the streets & stoned the nearby police station & a few shops in the vicinity to protest the desecration of their religious place. The police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the violent mob. Four of the protesters were injured in the police action. Though the situation was quickly brought under control, tension persisted in most parts of the city with corporate houses letting their staff go home early apprehending further violence.
