14th June, 2012, New Delhi: In another twist in the race for President, UPA rejected the name of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh as President. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi made it clear that Pranab Mukherjee, the Finance Minister is still in the race for the next president.
On Wednesday, both Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party suggested Manmohan Singh’s name. They also came out with the name of Somnath Chatterjee, the former Lok Sabha speaker and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the former president of India. They revealed that anyone of them is acceptable to them. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee told that Pranab Mukherjee and Hamid Ansari are Congress’ choices.
Later, Samajwadi Party chief had a dialogue with Sharad Yadav in this issue. The core group of BJP has settled to wait for Congress to response to the names their allies have decided.
Congress sources have suggested that Sonia Gandhi may call a meeting to discuss this issue with other UPA leaders. Few days back, Dr. Manmohan Singh himself stated that is happy with what he is doing.
