Centre bans prepaid mobile connections in J&K

kashmirNEW DELHI, India: From November 1 prepaid mobile phone will seize to work in Jammu and Kashmir. For serious security concerns the Centre decided on Friday to ban all existing prepaid mobile phone connections. No new connections will be issued and existing prepaid SIM cards will not be renewed thereafter decides the ministry of home affairs.

About 38 lakh prepaid mobile phone subscribers will be affected in J&K.

In matters of implementation of the decision the ministry has asked the DoT to take necessary action.

This decision of the Centre comes in the wake of reports of proper verification not being done while providing connections to the prepaid subscribers said ministry spokesperson.

Reports also states in some cases multiple connections have been issued to a single person. Fake documents/identity numbers are also being used in getting the connections.

The ministry spokesperson also mentions, “This situation had given rise to serious security concerns. Hence, the decision.”

According to the data there are nearly 19 lakh subscribers to Airtel, 12 lakh to BSNL and 7 lakh to Aircel.
