Bomb blast near Madurai; 3 killed, 2 injured

A BOMB exploded at Cholavandan railway station near Madurai in Tamil Nadu Tuesday. Police sources said at least three people have been killed and two has been injured.

It is not yet clear about the exact nature of the explosion. Cholavandan railway station is about 25 km from the Madurai city. The bomb exploded just after a passenger train entered the platform.

Madurai DIG P Balasubramaniam said, “Two people are dead in the explosion. The bomb squad is on the way for further investigation. The platform was empty when the explosion took place. A train was expected shortly before the explosion took place.”

The incident took place at 1805 Hours IST at platform no. 2. The roof of the platform collapsed.

The blast was due to fireworks parcel explode. It exploded after the parcel offloaded from the Mayiladuthurai-Tirunelveli passenger train.

According to a top police official the head of one of the victims was blown away and the body of other was charred.

Police has seized another crackers parcel from the station.

Six of the injured has been admitted to the Government Rajaji hospital and three others to a private hospital.

However the police has denied about any country bombs in the parcel box.

Madurai district SP Manoharan and few other top officials visited the spot.
