Australia Prime Minister called for calm

KEVIN RUDD AWB PRESSER

Kevin Rudd, the Prime Minister of Australia called for calm as Indian students led “vigilante” patrols on Wednesday. It was the second night of protests in the wake of attacks on foreign students there.

Indian students protested on the streets of western Sydney. There has been two police arrests after the attacks in Sydney and Melbourne. All these has led to diplomatic protests and fears of an international student exodus from Australia.

Kevin Rudd said, “I fully support hardline measures in response to any act of violence towards any student anywhere – Indian or otherwise.” He also added that they also need to render as completely unacceptable people taking the law into their own hands.

He also mentioned to the local radio there that it is unacceptable for anyone to commit an act of violence against any student.

He made this appeal after Indian students formed vigilante-like groups following a string of attacks there for over 18 months.
