31st July, 2012, New Delhi: A day after media persons were manhandled by the Team Anna’s supporters at Jantar Mantar, the veteran Gandhian activist said that he is sorry for what happened yesterday. The incident took place at around 10 pm when some Team Anna members stated that media is nit covering their agitation properly.
Anna Hazare added that he was really saddened by the incident. He asked his supporters that there should not be any kind of violence, in fact not even in words. He also warned his supporters that if they become violent, the centre will scuttle their agitation in just two days. He will cancel this agitation if this kind of things occurs. They have to strengthen democracy with the media.
Arvind Kejriwal, a prominent member of Team Anna, also added that the attack on media is not right as they are a part of their movement. Media is not supposed to be blamed.
After yesterday’s incident, BEA (Broadcast Editors’ Association) condemned the misbehavior of Anna’s supporters and asked for an immediate apology. In a press release, the Broadcast Editors’ Association said, “The Broadcast Editors’ Association strongly condemns attack on media by Anna supporters. The BEA believes that this is an interference in the functioning of media. The media is discharging its legitimate duty of covering the agitation in a fair manner. The BEA seeks an immediate apology from Team Anna for the misbehavior by its supporters.”
