25th August, 2012, New Delhi: The government of India told that it proposes to begin an initiative to supply essential medicines for free in public health facilities. In this year’s budget, a Rs. 100 crore provision has been made.
In the Lok Sabha, in a writer reply Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad told that this initiative will give affordable health care. This will promote rational use of medicines. He also stated that centre is taking measures to make sure that the doctors prescribe generic drugs.
He further added that instructions have been issued to all central government hospitals to advise medical practitioners to prescribe only generic versions of medicines and to mention generic equivalents wherever branded medicines are prescribed.
