By NIMY Sara Joy Mumbai, Feb. 15 – The largest single-day fund-raiser for cancer research in the world, “Terry Fox Run’ organized by the Terry Fox Foundation was participated by children from 45 schools of the Mumbai city Sunday. Terry Fox Run or Marathon of Hope is the non-competitive charitable trusts for started for the tribute to Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox and he was suffering from bone cancer. He popularized as his run to raise money for cancer research. It was noticeable; he started his Marathon of Hope with his prosthetic leg. For raising the funds to carry out the research project and to give a hand to the cancer patients at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai about from 45 schools, children took part in the Marathon of Hope in the city. Mumbai Police Commissioner D Sivanandan flagged off the marathon here. “Through this event, whatever money is collected is spent on cancer research. Today for the event, cancer patients have come from the Tata Memorial Hospital, have come to attend the event thus making it a very special day, particularly in view of cancer, and that it is a very deadly disease. The entire life of the patient and their families gets completely ruined. This is why medical funding and research is necessary,” he said. The event started from the Trident Hotel and finished off at the Brabourne Stadium. Many of the celebrities came out to support the event here. The coordinator of the event, Gul Kripalini informed that the main message of the marathon is to make awareness on the cancer as it is curable nowadays. “The sole aim of the committee in India and all over the world is to spread the message that cancer can be cured. Terry ran the ‘Marathon of Hope’ to spread the message of hope. Therefore I want to tell the children suffering from cancer here that there is hope. It is not that there is no hope and cancer is incurable,” he told. Before his death in 1981, Fox could cover 26 miles every day for 143 days. For the memory of his non-competitive marathon, Canadians honor him by conducting Marathon of Hope every year.
