The fire which broke out in the slum next to Bandra railway station in Mumbai on Friday is said to have injured 21 people while rendering 2000 people homeless. Rubina Ali, the child actor in Danny Boyle’s Oscar Winning movie, Slumdog Millionaire is among the ones to be rendered homeless in the fire.
A fire official said that a total of 21 people including 4 firemen have been injured while fighting the flames. The injured have been admitted to Bhabha hospital. However, no deaths have been reported so far. Hundreds of shanties were destroyed in the fire. Rubina said that they were watching TV when a neighbor alerted them about the fire. The family of the child artist was forced to spent the entire night in the railway station with Rubina losing books and precious belongings and memorabilia related to the film.
The fire broke out in Garibnagar slums at around 8:20 pm on Friday after which 16 jumbo water tankers and 34 fire engines were rushed to the spot. Though the exact cause of the fire is yet to be established it is believed that because of explosions of cylinders the fire spread quickly.
