27th February, 2013, Kolkata: On Wednesday morning, around 20 people were killed after a massive fire broke in Kolkata’s Surya Sen market near Sealdah. According to reports, more than fifty people were injured and they were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. More than twenty fire engines were used; but the cause of the blaze is still not known.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, asked the police, the municipal corporation and the fire brigade to submit the report. The chief minister also announced Rs. 2 lakh compensation to each family of those killed. Rs. 50000 compensation will be paid to those who are injured.
Mamata Banerjee asked people, who sleep there, to take precautionary measures. Deputy Mayor Farzana Alam blamed the previous Left government for this incident. She told that they would check the licenses of these building and action would be taken as early as possible.
Congress leader and Union Minister Deepa Das Munshi stated that there must be a judicial inquiry in this incident. On the other hand, West Bengal’s leader of the opposition Suryakant Mishra said that this not a time to play blame game. There has to be an enquiry on the incident.
