New Delhi, Feb. 12 – The IGI airport radar console at the air traffic control tower had collapsed put the safety of air passengers in threat for a while. It is the fourth radar console fell down happened within 30 days.
The sources said, “Once again the automation system of one of the radar console (monitor) went blank around 2.30 pm on Wednesday due to which the air traffic control officers could not get the details of an aircraft coming from the west and it took half-an-hour to restore the system.”
The radar console is to show the correct position of aircraft together with its speed, altitude and call-signs etc.
It was on Jan 14, the radar console four collapse series started. It made the radar automation system in danger and led to disruption in the flight movement. As the enquiries are going on still, there were other two more incidents made the trouble by the radar screens went blank.
It reveals the poor maintenance services of the system for the continued radar console collapse. While ATCOs blaming the maintenance service providers, they alleged, “though there is a back up system available for ATCOs to cope with such situations, but instead of switching over to back-up system they were busy in restoring the console, which led to delay in restoration process and delay in flights.”
