Delhi is getting a make over with the Commonwealth Games coming up soon. Well, it is at least on the cards. We have a whopping Rs. 270 crore estimation for streetscaping and beautification drive being undertaken jointly by CPWD, MCD, NDMC, DDA and PWD. Only time will tell whether it comes into effect.
If it happens, we will see the adjoining streets of the Games Village and stadiums in Delhi getting some specially designed street furniture, new look telephone booths and sleek info kiosks. Drinking water fountains, environment-friendly toilets and dustbins, bright coloured letter boxes will be installed along the roads that lead to the Games Village and stadiums.
Delhi won’t be changed completely, but the makeover plan will be effected in the limited areas covering only 70km length of the roads in the city. These streets will be made pedestrian friendly and barrier free. The central verge will be converted into a green belt with thick plantation and a massive streetscaping drive is being launched to beautify the roads.
“We have engaged some reputed consultants with global expertise to beautify and landscape 70 km of roads near the stadium and Games Village in the capital,” a senior official said.
Roads around IG Stadium, Yamuna Sports Complex, Karnal Singh Shooting Range, Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex, Chatrasal Stadium, Thyagraj Sports Complex, Siri Fort Complex, RK Khanna Stadium and Games Village will undergo massive refurbishing plan as part of the beautification plan.
Public Private Partnership model will be adopted for the installation of smart-looking info kiosks, telephone booths, toilets, dustbins, street furniture, letter boxes and drinking water fountains on the roads.
It is also learnt that after completion of the Games, government is considering to have a comprehensive maintenance plan for these roads. Mechanised cleaning and involvement of trained personnel are on cards. The government will also create awareness to follow civic norms, which is an important step to maintain the refurbished streets.
