Japanese car maker Nissan is gearing up to make it big in the lucrative Indian Car Market. It expects to have a market share of around 6% over the next 3 years.
The automobile giant is looking at Chennai as its next manufacturing centre which provides better production cost and abundant skilled labour. Reports say that its much talked about compact car Micra’s production will be entirely shifted to the new plant in Chennai in phases. Nissan is also looking at manufacturing Teana in India. The compact car from Nissan will be the first to roll out from that facility, which will have an annual capacity of 400,000 units. Nissan will begin production with a target of 200,000 units and will ramp it up to 300,000 later.
If sources are to be believed there are five new products in the pipeline for the Indian market, including the compact car Micra and its sedan version. Nissan currently sells two models in India – Teana, a premium sedan, and X-Trail, a sports utility vehicle. Both have done good to an extent, keeping in mind their higher price tags for being entirely imported.
Nissan will launch new versions of the 2 existing models next week. We can expect major changes on the X-Trail with a new body and chassis, enhanced interiors and a new fuel-efficient engine. The Teana will undergo substantial changes to its exterior and interior design and styling, but will retain the same power-train.
