At a Senate Committee hearing on 26/11 (the Mumbai terrorist attack), McCain, the US Republican Presidential candidate for the 2008 election, said that Pakistan should take necessary steps to reduce the threat of a re-occurrence of Mumbai-like terrorist attacks.
At the Capitol Hill McCain said, “This is what would satisfy the United States… I think that there are variety of reasons that argue for the arrest of the people who are responsible and the terrorist’s organizations.”
Referring to the testimony be experts he also said that the issue should be given priority to prevent growth of any further tension between the two South Asian neighbors and the US should do everything to prevent escalation of tensions.
According to McCain the 26/11 was well orchestrated, well trained and well planned. It had outdone the security forces until the NSG commandos showed up. These terrorists were not necessarily the suicide bombers, but they were also able to hit number of targets with only few in numbers.
A senior official also said that there is a real concern on the dangers that terrorist organizations might obtain nuclear weapons. He, Brian Michael Jenkins, also said, “We do receive regular assurances from the Pakistani authorities that they have the nuclear weapons under tight control.”
